Lectures All lectures are about an hour long and are $100. TRUNK SHOW - From Polyester to Published This is about an hour-long display of 25 to 30 bed and wall quilts that I have made, from the polyester double-knit baby quilt that will outlast many future generations, to the appliqued wall quilts on the front of Menagerie Publishing's books and patterns, and continuing on to whatever I've just finished. The collection includes a variety of methods such as hand and machine quilting, and hand and fused applique. You will hear stories of what worked as well as what didn't work. Questions will be answered and information shared throughout the showing. Color For Quilters A one-hour lecture on color as it pertains to quilters. Many visual aids and actual fabrics are used to show how to add sparkle to your quilts. The color wheel, tints, tones, shades, value, and intensity will all be clearly explained. Heirloom Machine Quilting This lecture/demonstration takes the mystery out of machine quilting and shows that with just a few simple shapes, either alone or combined, you can machine-quilt almost any design on a standard sewing machine. I have an overhead projector so everyone can easily see the designs as I draw them.
Retreat
Color by Number One or two-day retreat Explore color and value and the effect it has in your quilts. Using the Indian Puzzle block, we'll see how value effects both the main and secondary designs. The color wheel will be explained, along with tints, tones, and shades and how they all work to either make or break your quilts. The method I've developed and call Color by Number should simplify the fabric and color selection process for you. We will explore block setting, secondary designs, play "What if..." and change pieces of the block. Contact me for fees
Classes I am not the kind of instructor who insists that every student do things her way. I will make suggestions and demonstrate various techniques besides the ones I have found work best for me, then will leave it up to the students to decide what works best for them. I encourage everyone to try new methods and take classes from any and all teachers when they have the opportunity. I am available for guild and quilt shop classes as well as retreats and quilt shows. Classes can be expanded for all day or multiple days. I also admit I'm not very good at thinking up cutsie names for quilts and classes. Most names are just descriptive of the class or quilt. My class size maximums are smaller than some teachers. My classes are more technique oriented, and I give lots of personal attention to every student. Maximum students: 16 3 hr. class - $200 4 hr. class - $250. 6 hr. class - $350 Some classes can accommodate a few more students. There will be a $10 per person charge over the maximum.
Easy Appliqué Design In this class, taught by the author, you will learn to design your own appliqué blocks and borders using The Appliqué Pattern Book, Vol. I & II. Both books have multi-sized individual patterns making it so easy to select the shapes you like. Discover simple methods to design blocks and borders that appeal to your style and taste. Anyone can do this even if they've never drawn or designed anything before. This is a non-machine class. Purchase of the books is not required. Basic patterns from Vol. I & II will be given out. Six-hour class goes a step further with cutting fabric, fine tuning, and doing a mock-up of your original design. Applique design supply list. All skill levels. Maximum students - 20, 3 hr. or 6 hr. class. Hand Appliqué Without Tears Yes, it is possible to do beautiful needle-turn appliqué without tears. Get sharp inside and outside points and smooth curves using the invisible appliqué stitch that really is invisible. Learn favorite tools, techniques, and tips that I have both discovered myself and learned from world-famous appliqué artists. Primary methods taught are mylar templates and starch, needle-turn, and freezer paper. The mylar and starch is a great method for both beginners and experienced appliquers. You need to know several of applique and when they are best used. Hints on organizing appliques and thread, plus sewing, project storing, and template filing. This is a technique class, not a project class. A simple pattern of a heart and two leaves will be used for practice. Pattern, appliqué needle and four appliqué pins provided. Hand applique supply list. Beginning-intermediate skill level. 3 hr. or 4 hr. class. Precision Machine Piecing Are your 12" blocks always a 1/4" or more too large or too small? Do seams not line up when you sew your blocks or rows together? After the borders are sewn on, does the top poof in the center or the borders ripple? After this class, you will make 12" blocks that will actually be 12" finished, and your quilt tops will lie flat and be square. Practice squares will be sewn together to get correct seam allowance and needle and fabric positions before beginning a small 24" Jacob's Ladder wallhanging. Accuracy in rulers, cutting, sewing, pressing and quilting will all be discussed and taught. All skill levels. 4 hr. & 6 hr. class. Free-Motion Heirloom Machine Quilting Machine quilting done on a regular sewing machine has rapidly gained popularity and acceptance due to the desire to complete more projects so we can buy more fabric, and to lifestyles that don't allow months or even weeks for hand quilting. The most common types of machine quilting are stippling or meandering, in-the-ditch, and continuous-line block and border patterns. Echo and outline quilting, as well as other filler patterns, will also be taught and practiced. Discussions and demonstrations on specialty and metallic threads, batting, continuous-line patterns and stencils, marking, presser feet and needles. Six hour class involves students also bringing a small basted wallhanging to quilt. Machine quilting supply list. All skill levels. 4 hr. & 6 hr. class. Machine Quilting II: Okay, I Can Stipple, Now What? This class introduces students to a world of designs made with combinations of just a few different shapes. Some machine quilting experience is required, but no sewing machine needed for 3-hr. class. We'll be drawing on paper and practicing patterns and motifs. It's hard to quilt it if you don't know how to draw it. Six-hr. class will need a sewing machine. All skill levels. Maximum students - 20, 3 hr. & 6 hr. class. Stars, Strips & Squares Based on one of my favorite books - Sandi Cummings' Thinking Outside the Block. Make a more contemporary-looking quilt using traditional blocks. My method of cutting and piecing produces very accurate blocks so they go together easily. Looks great in either bright fabrics or muted tones. All skill levels. 6 hr. class. Strips on Strips Based on Sandi Cummings' book Thinking Outside the Block. No templates, no pattern. A square is sliced, a strip inserted, cut again, another strip inserted, repeat, repeat. A great way of using leftover strips or quarter yards. Fun and easy. All skill levels. 3 hr, class. Crazy Squares Based on Sandi Cummings' book Thinking Outside the Block. No templates, no pattern. Another great way of using leftovers or quarter yards. Even more fun than Strips on Strips. Yes, the border really is that bright. This is definitely a "Happy Quilt," which is what I've named it. All skill levels. 3 hr. class. Crazy Squares & Strips Above two classes combined to an all-day class. All skill levels. 6 hr. class.
Rose Wreath Beautiful wreath of flowers and leaves. Mylar templates and starch simplify layering, placement, and sewing. My original design. Kits available with all fabric needed for the 12" finished block, including finished stems with fusible strip on the back. Not a beginner's class, must have some applique experience. 6 hr. class.
Christmas Cardinals This adorable 14 x 16 wallhanging of five cardinals sitting on tree branches is quickly and easily hand appliqued using a combination of needleturn applique and mylar templates and starch. When finished, it can be embellished with beads for snowflakes and eyes. The original pattern was designed by Nancy S. Brown and appeared in Traditional Quiltworks magazine, issue 35. I have permission from the magazine to reprint and teach this project. Beginner (with some experience) - Intermediate. 4 hr. or 6 hr. class.
Tulips, from Crossed Stems Sampler This 12" appliqued block was made using the mylar templates and starch. I will teach this method, but will also demo needleturn and freezer paper. The stems are simplified by fusing standard stems and sewing them by hand later. This is one of a four block sampler I designed for The Applique Society's newsletter to go with an article I wrote on designing your own applique. Beginner (with some experience) - Intermediate. 4 hr. or 6 hr. class.
Woven Lattice A fun no-brainer when one is needed. Using a theme fabric and coordinates, you can make this quilt for any occassion or person. A great pattern because it can use any number of blocks horizontally or vertically. The 8" block makes it easy to get the quilt a little larger or smaller. The simple geometric style makes it easy to customize it for anyone simply by changing fabrics and colors. Directions and yardage will be given for a 4x5 block crib quilt or a 5x7 block large lap quilt. All skill levels. 3 hr, 4 hr. or 6 hr. class.
Fusible Applique The perfect solution for quick projects and gifts. Not everything has to be hand appliqued. With Steam-a-Seam fusible, machine stitching is not necessary. If a particular project is not selected by the group, I like to use my Snowflake Fantasy pattern, although any except Serenity would work as well. The snowflake uses only two fabrics, so more gets done in class. All skill levels. 3 hr., 4 hr. or 6 hr. class.
Dimensional Applique I & II Class I is the basics: gathered circles, yo-yo flowers, ruching, buds, etc. Class II is more unusual flowers from various books on the market. Pre-class preparation required. Pattern for 12" wallhanging given, but class time is used for making the individual flowers. Dimensional applique supply list. All skill levels. 3 hr., or 4 hr. class.
Snippets Fun, simple 10" original patterns appropriate for the month of class in Cindy Walter's easy technique. This class would only be in conjunction with another class I was teaching at the same location. $8.00 kits with everything except scissors and tweezers are available. All skill levels. 1 hour. $60.
Machine Trapunto Hari Walner's method of beautiful stuffed trapunto and quilting all done by machine. Some machine quilting experience needed. This is not a "learn to machine quilt" class. I have Ms. Walner's permission to copy and use her patterns in my classes as long as credit is given to her. Two different projects to choose from (same project for the whole class). A small 6" rose or an 18" design. Trapunto supply list. Beginner (with some machine-quilting experience) - Intermediate 3 hr. or 4 hr. class
Margaritaville A study in color and value, as all the blocks are the same. The sashing is a curved, pieced sashing with 9-patches for cornerstones. Intermediate. 4 hr. or 6 hr. class
Beginner's Paper Piecing Learn the paper piecing method making either 4" log cabin blocks or simple 6" flower blocks. 3 hr. or 4 hr. class Paper Foundation Piecing Shop or guild's choice of pattern. Just send me the book or pattern with directions. It will be returned to you in perfect condition - I just need to peek. Paper piecing supply list. All skill levels. 4 hr. or 6 hr. class Stained Glass Applique Shop or guild's choice of pattern, as long as I can use the Clover fusible bias on the roll and Clover's Mini Iron. Just send me the book or pattern with directions. It will be returned to you in perfect condition - I just need to peek. Stained glass supply list. All skill levels. 3 hr, 4 hr, or 6 hr. class. Table Runner A versatile 3-block tablerunner that can be made for any holiday or occasion. Mine is done in Christmas fabrics. Tablerunner supply list. All skill levels. 3 hr. or 4 hr. class.
Classes on Menagerie Publishing patterns. #201 Flower Valley Sampler Create a four-block updated version of a traditional appliquéd wallhanging. This is the wallhanging on the front cover of The Applique Pattern Book, Vol. I. All skill levels. 4 hr. or 6 hr. classes.
#202 Snowflake Fantasy Only two fabrics are needed for this unique wallhanging of four different snowflake blocks with additional corner and center motif designs. This is a great pattern for fusible applique. All skill levels. 4 hr. or 6 hr. classes.
#203 Tulips and Periwinkle An appliquéd floral wreath block with a floral vine border. The pattern comes with two versions of the 16" center in the envelope. One version is fuller and has more pieces than the other. The one pictured is the fuller one. The border fits either block. All skill levels. 4 hr. or 6 hr. classes.
#204 Heart Wreath An appliquéd wreath of hearts and leaves with a heart and leaf motif border. The pattern comes with two versions of the 16" center in the envelope. One version is fuller and has more pieces than the other. The one pictured here has the fewer pieces. The border fits either block. All skill levels. 4 hr. or 6 hr. classes.
#205 Serenity Nine pieced star blocks set diagonally with appliquéd alternate blocks, corner and side triangles. Learn fast and accurate rotary cutting and piecing techniques for this stunning wallhanging. Serenity includes some of the appliqué instruction, but most of the emphasis is on accurate cutting, piecing and assembly of the pieced block and quilt. Skill Level: Intermediate. 6 hr. class only.
Classes on #201 - #204 will cover much of the same material as the Hand Appliqué class, with the time spent working on the actual project instead of a practice piece. Help with color selections happily given. Although these classes can be for beginner appliquérs, they are not "how-to-applique" classes and will probably be a little overwhelming for someone who has never done any appliqué.
Additional Class Information Class fees do not include incidental expenses such as parking, meals, cabs, and mileage at .37 per mile round trip. Lodging, if necessary, in a motel, hotel, or private room in a TOTALLY nonsmoking household. Pets are great. I usually prefer to drive unless it is quite a distance (more than 400 miles). I also prefer to make my own airline reservations - at the lowest coach fare available, depending on time allowed. The more advance notice, the better. Guilds and shops are encouraged to share expenses and book multiple classes. Detailed supply lists will be sent upon receipt of a signed contract for any class. All classes include excellent detailed handouts. If the group wishes, basic notions used for class and Menagerie Publishing's books and patterns can be available for purchase. If the class is held in a quilt shop, the items will not be brought for sale. I will be happy to make arrangements with the shop owner regarding the availability of the items I use and recommend.
